The Penrith Valley Athletics Centre (PVAC) community is mourning the loss of former athlete Laura Johnson, whose remarkable achievements on the track and inspiring strength off it left a lasting impact on Australian athletics and all who knew her.
Laura’s athletics journey began as a young competitor at Penrith Athletics Centre, where her talent and determination quickly set her apart. Emerging as one of Australia’s most promising race walkers, she proudly represented her country on the international stage three times. Laura competed at the 2000 World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile, the 2001 World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, and the 2002 World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.
Her performances at the highest level were outstanding. As a teenager, Laura achieved a top-10 finish in the world in the 10,000m Race Walk at both the 2000 and 2002 World Junior Championships, cementing her place among the sport’s elite young athletes.
One of the defining moments of her career came in 2001 when she represented Australia at the World Youth Championships while battling chicken pox. Despite her illness, she competed with courage and determination, demonstrating the resilience that would become a hallmark of her life.
Domestically, Laura enjoyed tremendous success, winning multiple Australian Championship gold medals and earning numerous silver and bronze medals across junior, Under-23, and senior competitions. Her NSW Under-20 State Record in the 10,000m Race Walk stood for an extraordinary 21 years before being broken in 2022.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Laura remained closely connected to the PVAC community. She was a familiar face supporting her nieces and nephews as they continued the family’s involvement in the club she loved.
Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, Laura leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, humility, kindness, and inspiration. Her achievements will forever be remembered, and her influence will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
Rest peacefully, Laura.
